The Dog Days of Summer are Here. Don't Roll Over!

One of the most difficult things any professional is faced with is dealing with realities outside our control. (In truth, there’s a lot more in this realm than we give credit to, but…)  The dog days of summer are one of those difficulties.

You have goals you’re trying to achieve, projects you need to finish, programs you want to launch–and no one’s around!

Ok, maybe not no one. You’re here. I’m here.  But, many of the stakeholders and decision makers you rely on are elsewhere. The business world has collectively downshifted.

That is the reality.  And we’re not going to change it.  It’s August after all!

So how do I keep momentum moving forward?

The first thing is to recognize this as an objective reality that has nothing to do with you. It's not your fault, you didn't cause it and you have no control over it. It’s important not to get discouraged! In a former newsletter (When Motivation Goes Missing) I wrote about the rhythms of business. The rhythms of everything, really.  Well, this is another one of those rhythms.  It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to hit your targets or grow your business.  It doesn’t mean something is wrong.

Stay the course!

If downshifting isn't in your DNA, (or your manager’s) channel that energy into refining the projects and priorities that easily get overlooked when business is in full swing.  Think of it as a respite of a kind, when you actually have time to think strategically. Assess your business, tighten your operations, uncover new opportunities, research a topic that will help you and your business grow and head into Steptember with an upgraded plan.

For me, it’s important to re-inspire myself at this time, too. When times are slow or challenging, doubts want to grab hold. You start second-guessing every move, feeling like you’re hitting a wall or spinning your wheels.  None of that leads to anything good.

How we think during these sluggish times matters so much!

When I need perspective, I revisit these quotes. They challenge me to think differently:

  • “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” ~Henry Ford

  • “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” ~Winston Churchill

  • “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win…”  ~William Shakespeare

Use what you like and if you wish, share what works for you in the comments to inspire others.

Don't confuse a quieter marketplace with a lack of opportunity. Some of your best work happens when the noise dies down.

The pace may be slower. Your progress doesn't have to be!

I’m here to help.

~Joyce
