What is Negotiation?

It is you and your counterpart coming to an agreement on the value of a given thing. It’s the process of advocating for the value of that thing and concludes with you and your counterpart agreeing on that value.

Everyone negotiates:  

  • An employee seeking a promotion, raise, or accepting a new job offer.

  • A business owner setting, and holding, rates.

  • A sales rep renewing business at a net gain.

  • A leader securing budget, scope, or headcount.

Negotiating to reach important decisions in my favor is a practiced skill, a learned discipline. It isn't a personality trait.  Without methods and strategy, even seasoned pros back off their position unnecessarily, discount too fast, or accept terms they later regret.

Negotiations often go wrong before the meeting even starts with critical, invisible assumptions:

  • I don’t want to pry...

  • I can’t ask that...

  • I shouldn’t push

  • They’ll recognize the value on their own

  • We have a great relationship. That's enough…

   Those assumptions quietly cost you.
